GOA (Glossary of Acronyms)

CA

Career Advisor

At the Job Shop, staff who meet with clients one-on-one and facilitate workshops are called Career Advisors.

 

EI

Employment Insurance

A federal program providing income benefits to unemployed workers. Formerly called Unemployment Insurance or UI.

 

SC

Service Canada

The branch of the federal government which administers Employment Insurance and programs to assist people in getting back to work.

 

JCP

Job Creation Partnership

A work experience opportunity of limited duration to help enhance skills.

 

MHR

Ministry of Human Resources

The provincial ministry in charge of BC Benefits or what is commonly known as Income Assistance.

 

NIEFS

North Island Employment Foundations

An organization funded by Service Canada to administer the SDEB program. NIEFS also provides Employment Assistance Services in Campbell River.

 

OCS

Opportunities Career Services

An organization providing job search assistance in Courtenay and Campbell River

 

PPSEC

Private Post-Secondary Education Commission of British Columbia

RTWAP

Return to Work Action Plan

The document required to apply for federally funded employment programs. Career Advisors assist their clients with Action Plans.

 

SEP

Self Employment Program

A federally funded program to assist EI eligible individuals in starting a new business. The program is locally available through Community Futures.

 

SDEB

Skill Development Employment Benefits

A federal program locally administered by North Island Employment Foundation Society. The program allows EI eligible individuals to apply for financial assistance for retraining. Applicants work with a Career Advisor to prepare an Action Plan and research package. http://www.crefs.net/nfa.htm

 

SND

Service Needs Determination

An interview between a client and a Career Advisor to determine which services, programs and/or workshops would assist the client in reaching their career goals. The SND is completed during the first appointment with a Career Advisor.
